Description
The main goal of this course is to improve students’ oral and written proficiency. Group
and pair work will be emphasized to encourage students to talk and express their opinions
freely, as well as strategies that help students acquire the Spanish language. Also,
students will be exposed to a variety of thought-provoking readings, some films and
audiovisuals materials. Contemporary issues from cultural perspectives will be debated
and analyzed so students’ awareness and understanding will grow not only of Hispanic
cultures, but also of their own. The readings have been chosen from a wide diversity of
sources: literature, newspapers, magazines, comic strip, advertisements, political
propaganda, health brochures, songs, films. Ideas for the oral presentations may be

Grading Scale
Borderline grades will not be rounded and the grade breakdown for this course will be:
A 90.00-100.0
C 70.00-79.99
F 00.00-59.99
B 80.00-89.99
D 60.00-69.99

Class participation
According to the instructor’s criteria, a score or a set of scores will be assigned for each
project. At the end of the semester these points will be averaged after the lowest score is
dropped.


Attendance Policy
Due to the nature of language acquisition, it is mandatory that you attend all classes.
After three absences, your instructor will deduct 1 point for each day missed from your
20 class participation points. This means that if your attendance grade is presented on a 0-
20 scale, you will lose 1 points out of 20 for each day missed over the allotted days, or 1
point from your final course grade. There are no make-ups of daily work, i.e. quizzes,
homework or other classroom assessments. No late work will be accepted. There is no
extra credit. Please, do not bring excuses since the three allotted absences will take care
of emergency situations. Students with 20 absences or more will not be allowed to take
the final exam.

Early Departures And Late Arrivals Policy
Time missed due to early departures and late arrivals to class will be counted as absences
in the following ways: (a) each day a student FOR WHATEVER REASON departs early
or arrives late 10 minutes or more, this will be counted as an absence; (b) each set of 15
minutes lost due to early departures or tardies from different days will also be counted as
an absence. For example: a student who is absent four times during the semester and
arrives 5 minutes late on six occasions, will have six absences at the end of the semester
instead of four, and will lose three points of his/her participation grade (for having three
absences beyond the limit allowed).

Class Rules
Disrupting situations and behavior do not add to the learning experience in the classroom
and will not be tolerated by the instructor. They include, among others, inappropriate
gestures, reading newspapers, completing crosswords, trying to complete homework
during the class, studying for another class, using English language at this level during
class activities, eating, chewing gum, using electronic devices not related with the class,
and conducting phone conversations in or near the classroom. Please, make sure your
beeper and cell phone is in off mode before entering the classroom and keep it away from
you all the time. Each time your cell phone beeps in the classroom you will lose one point
in your class participation grade. Please note, reading during a class presentation is not
recommended since it will affect your grade. You have to attend the class regularly to
find out next class’ homework, and as soon as possible exchange e-mails and phone
numbers with at least three classmates to get homework information from them in case
you are absence during the semester. And, remember, late homework will not be accepted
FOR WHATEVER REASON.

All grade work is subject to the Academic Honesty policy of the University of Georgia.
All work must be your own. Any kind of outside help, such as “proofreading” of
compositions, is a violation of academic honesty. Please consult your instructor if you
have any doubts as to what is or is not academic dishonesty, and consult the
Undergraduate Bulletin for details.


Learning Disabilities
Students who have been tested by the University and diagnosed with a learning disability
should alert the instructor of the condition immediately in order to receive accommodat-
ion. Please have the appropriate forms from Disability Services available to give to the
instructor.
