Free File Hosting Services Compared
Rapidshare is a name synonymous with free file uploading on the internet. If a file is too
large to send as an email attachment, just upload it to rapidshare and email the file link
to the recipient. Rapidshare also provides a delete link so that you can remove the file
from Rapidshare servers once the recipient has download the file to his own computer.
When you download a file from Rapidshare, you will notice a download counter or a
waiting limit. This is only for free rapidshare accounts and if you can spare a few Euros
and buy a Rapidshare premium account, the download counter is removed. Plus you get
unlimited downloads otherwise there's a restriction on the data that you transfer during a
certain period.
Rapidshare will delete files that have not been accessed for 30 days or longer. Rapidshare
premium account supports download managers and provide much faster downloads.
There are very rare moments when Rapidshare provide free accounts for a week
rapidshare.de/cgi-bin/freeaccount.cgi but it is next to impossible to get hold of them as
the limit is exhaused very soon.
If you are a heavy user, the best bet would be to buy a Rapidshare Premium Account
using either the credit card or PayPal. And other than Rapidshare, the other two popular
file sharing services are:
Megaupload - No registration is required. File Size Limit: 250 MB. Your uploaded files will
be deleted only after it become unused for 30 days. So, if many of your friends download
it, over and over again, the files will always be there. The Megaupload site allows only
one download at a time from a IP address. Fixed number of slots are provides based on
your country.
YouSendIt - YouSendIt lets you send files up to 1GB. YouSendIt can send files securely
(https) and scans files for viruses.When you send a file via the YouSendIt Web site, an e-
mail goes to your recipient with a link to your file, which is stored securely on
YouSendIt's server. The file will stay there for seven days or until it is downloaded 25
times, whichever comes first. You only have to enter a To email address; you are not
required to enter a From address. You can also enter an optional message. No
registration is required. Recommended large file hosting service.
Rapidshare doesn't have file search engine though you can use Google to search the
rapidshare file URL. Here are some examples:

Clone with FTP support and no download limit. Resumes broken downloads
Rapidshare is the default destination for all sort of program files, ebooks, movies and
audio clips. But the problem is that either you get a Rapidshare Premium Account or will
face restrictions on your downloading limit.
Generally people who are on dial-up or have a dynamic IP address assigned by their ISP,
they'll just turn off and restart their modems to change their IP address to fool
rapidshare and resume downloading.
The other trick to cheat rapidshare without getting a rapidshare premium account
involves some sort of dos commands:
1. Clear your browser cookies.
2. Open the command prompt (Start - Run - cmd.exe)
3. Run the following simple commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4. Type exit to close the DOS window. Restart the rapidshare download job.
Now Megaupload is even smarter and impose a limit of simulataneous users based on
your country. To bypass the Megaupload limit, type the download uRL in a translate
website and work on from there
For those who want a quick short guide on the usage:
No need to change the settings. The default download location is your desktop. You can
browse to and set your download manager to send the links to it, if you want.
Go to http://www.steganos.com/?area=updateproxylist, ctrl+a, ctrl+c, Proxy Checker,
Import from clipboard, check and copy valid to clipboard. Press Edit next to “Proxy:”,
ctrl+v at the bottom, save and close it. Check ‘Auto rotate’. Paste your RS link and
download it.
Whether you are a seasoned RapidShare (RS) downloader or an occassional one, you
must have been in a situation where you have already downloaded your quota using the
free account and hence you can’t download any more until about an hour.
The best solution is to, of course purchase a premium account.
But if you don’t want that, there are two (more exists, but It didn’t need to explore
those) possible workarounds. The 1st one is explained here.
Keep in mind that you would still have to wait for about 50 seconds for the download
ticket count down to finish for each download. You can download more than 1 file at a
time.
The program we are going to use is called ‘Grabber’. I am not the creator of this program
and I take no credit/responsibility for it. I am simply sharing it with others.
a. Download the current latest version from http://www.sendspace.com/file/t4fsrb.
Extract the contents and launch Grabber.exe
b. Paste your RS link in step 1 (step 1 as in the screenshot below, click on it)
c. Click GRAB of step 3. You will probably you see a message that download limit has
exceeded like in the bottom of the above screenshot.
d. Go to http://www.steganos.com/?area=updateproxylist. ctrl + a, ctrl + c
e. In Grabber, click Proxy Checker at the top, click Import from Clipboard, then Check and
once it’s finished, click Copy valid to Clipboard.
f. Click Edit of step 2 and paste at the end in the text file that opens up. Save and close.
Check Auto rotate.
g. Click Settings, go to Grabber tab and set Grabber timeout to 5. Go through the settings
in other tabs and change as you wish. Press Accept.
h. Now paste the RS link again in step 1 and click GRAB.
i. Wait for the download ticket time to end and click Download button when it’s active.
That’s it.
