WERU’s Brother Al Gives His Favorite 5
Andy Palacio & the Garifuna Collective --- Watina
Andy Palacio is Garafuna, a culture that traces its roots to shipwrecked slaves from West Africa
on St. Vincent Island in the 1600s.His earlier recordings were “punta rock,” pop oriented and
synthesizer driven. On Watina, Garifuna for “I call out,” Palacio and co-producer Ivan Duran
set out to create an all-star cast of multigenerational Garafuna musicians that look more closely
at their soul and roots. Stripped of the electronics and influenced by paranda icon Paul Nabor,
Watina is rootsy, soulful and mystical, exploring themes of pain, beauty and survival. With
the release of one of the best World cds of 2007, Palacio, was set to take a giant step onto the
world stage. Tragically, he died in January of this year at the age of 47
Ray Bonneville ---- Goin by Feel
Canadian born Juno Award winner Ray Bonneville’s latest effort brings us more of his deep
grooves with percussive electric guitar, weathered voice and soulful harmonica. His songs
are believable and image provoking and tell smart surprising tales of emotional dislocation.
Produced by Gurf Morlix (who also contributes his musical talents) and Rob Heany, Goin By
Feel’s 12 cuts on Red House Records truly showcase Bonneville’s tough gritty songs and mas-
terful guitar playing.

best record of 2008.
Tracy Bonham --- Blink the Brightest
A new addition to our library was Oregon native Tracy Bonham’s 2005 release of Blink the
Brightest. It’s her third disc and is a pop music gem, combining lavish melodies and snappy
lyrics of emotionally complex subjects, brought to life by her dry, sardonic vocals. Trained as
a concert violinist, she also plays piano, guitar and vibes on this note-perfect production on
Zoe Records. This disc shows her full spectrum of talents and fulfills the promise shown on
her earlier works.
on earlier works.
DON’T GIVE UP A THING
Keith Greeninger --- Glorious Peasant
On his 3rd release, Greeninger gives us Americana with soul, Hammond organ, flute and
warm and powerful vocals. In 2005 he won the Telluride Troubadour National song writing
competition. Backed up by a talented band that includes multi-instrumentalist Dayan Kai and
John R. Burr, pianist for Alison Brown’s band, Greeninger weaves together socially conscious
lyrics and beautiful harmonies. Produced by Greeninger and Tim Price for Wind River Music,
these 11 tracks give you 51 minutes of songs that touch, inspire and celebrate life.
