2008-2009 ISACA Academic Scholarship Competition
ISACA is a pace-setting global organization for IT professionals focusing on information
governance, security and audit. IT has become essential in managing the transactions,
information and knowledge necessary to initiate and sustain business. Today’s
organizations rely upon individuals who know how to secure systems and evaluate and
report on the adequacy of system controls, security practices, efficiency and
effectiveness to assure that data integrity is protected and that systems comply with
applicable policies, standards, laws and regulations. ISACA’s 75,000+ members
address these needs as IS auditors, consultants, educators, IS security professionals,
regulators, and chief information officers.
The Central Maryland ISACA Chapter invites essay entries for the ISACA
Scholarship Competition Award. To learn more about our organization and

COMPETITION OVERVIEW
Participants are to write an essay on the topic listed below. Submissions will be judged
by IT and audit professionals who are Board Members of the Central Maryland ISACA
Chapter Academics Committee. Essays will be evaluated based on innovation and
originality, ideas, relevance, clarity of thought, demonstrated understanding of the
subject matter, organization, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
AWARDS
Scholarships will be awarded to the top three submissions as decided by Central
Maryland ISACA Chapter Academics Committee. All decisions are final. This
scholarship is a one-time award.
1st Place Winner: $2,500.00
2nd Place Winner: $1,500.00
3rd Place Winner: $1,000.00
All scholarship award winners will have their essay published on the Central Maryland
ISACA website.

ESSAY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Essays will only be accepted from undergraduate students who are enrolled and in
good standing in a full-time program at a college or university.
o Provide a copy of transcripts to prove enrollment. Transcripts do not need to be
official transcripts - transcripts printed by the student from the University's system are
acceptable.
• The undergraduate student must be legal residents of Maryland OR currently
attending an accredited college or university in state of Maryland.
o If a student is not attending an accredited college in Maryland, please provide a copy
of a driver license that will help to determine if a student is a legal Maryland resident.
• Essays should be double-spaced and must include between 900 and 1500 words,
excluding names, headers, and endnotes.
• Students essays must be based on the following topic:
What are the benefits for students, if colleges/universities begin to
include IT auditing and / or information security in their curriculums?
• Only one essay per author will be considered.
• Essays should be submitted in a standard word processing format such as Microsoft
Word or WordPerfect. When citing sources, essays must follow either the MLA or
APA format and the essay must contain a reference page.
• Essays must be submitted and received no later than December 31, 2008. Any
entries received after this date will not be considered.
• Authors will be notified by February 27, 2009 of decisions on publication and award
winners.
• During the period that the essay is under consideration, the author asserts that it has
not been published elsewhere and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
• All competition submissions must include a cover sheet (form1), student certification
(form 2), and academic verification (form 3).
Submissions not meeting the requirements defined above will be disqualified
from the competition.

All essay competition entries along with the cover sheet, student certification and
academic verification forms must be submitted for consideration to:
