Course description:
Physiology has a foundation of concepts and ideas that are used repeatedly to explain a variety of
observations. Lectures will focus on these fundamental concepts and ideas and use them to explain
phenomenon such as communication (the physiology of transport phenomena, nerve and synapse, muscle, the
brain and spinal cord, the endocrine glands), the function of the gastrointestinal tract, the regulation of blood
flow (cardiovascular system and the kidney), and the regulation of blood gas concentrations (respiration). A
discussion utilizing the integration of ideas and concepts to explain physiological and pathophysiological
situations such as acid/base disorders, shock, altitude and exercise will conclude the semester. The course
presents the factual material and theories used to explain the function of the organs or systems so that you are
able to utilize this information in explaining life situations. The majority of the material is presented in the
context of feedback control systems with emphasis placed on the function of the normative cell, tissue and
body. References are made to function at other levels on the continuum from pathological conditions to the
trained or adapted body.
Course Textbook and Resources:
The textbook for the course is Textbook of Medical Physiology, 11th edition by Guyton and Hall and is
available at the University bookstore. The 10th edition is also an acceptable textbook for the course. A copy of
the textbook is on reserve at the library. The course outline, a tentative lecture schedule, readings and handouts
for specific lectures can be found at the Courselink (Blackboard, formerly WebCT) site for the course
(courselink@uoguelph.ca). In WebCT you can submit questions on the course discussion board where TAs will
be monitoring daily. The discussion board will be monitored from Sept. 10th to Nov. 30th, and will be shut down
after Nov. 30th.
There are 4 teaching assistants (TAs) as resources for this course. TA’s will be monitoring the WebCT
bulletin board, be available to e-mail directly to answer questions and run question and answer sessions
following the completion of every section and prior to each test. There will be extra question and answer
sessions prior to the final exam.

Final Exam - Total semester – mandatory
The tests on Oct-02, Oct-23 and Nov-13 will be written in the lecture room on the date indicated. The
final examination scheduled for December will be written at a time and in a location determined by the Office
of Registrarial Services. The final exam is mandatory. The tests on Oct-02, Oct-23 and Nov-13 are optional. If
you choose to write Test I (Oct-02) you have the option to drop the mark from your record, if you wish to do
this you must indicate this to me in writing (or e-mail) no later than Oct-22. If you choose to write Test II or
Test III you do not have the option to drop the marks. The weighting (%) of any test not written and the
weighting (%) of a test dropped will be added to the weighting (%) of the final exam.
