RULES AND REGULATIONS
COMPETITION: Limited to Residents of North Carolina.
The General Rules and Regulations of the Fair will govern this department. Be sure to
read these rules before entering or competing in this department. Some additional rules
are:
1. Entries must be made by the exhibitor, and completed since the 2008 Fair.
2. PLEASE remove or inform the entry staff person of any item listed on the form that
was NOT brought in. Failure to remove those items could mean disqualification of all of
your other items.
3. Entering items in the correct category is the responsibility of the individual, not the
entry department or Handicrafts and Hobbies staff. Items should be entered on form
exactly as shown in premium book. Items entered incorrectly will be subject to
disqualification.
4. One entry per person will be allowed under one premium number. Note exception
under Scrapbooking category.
5. No Group Projects will be accepted in this department.
6. On the entry form the Department letter is EE. The class or premium list number is
the number after the EE in each category.
7. The categories are specific and the entry must be placed in the correct category.
For example, all wreaths must be placed in the WREATHS category; a holiday painted
item must be entered in the DECORATIVE PAINTING category not in Decorative
Creations; a handmade basket must be in the BASKETRY category; and an angel must
be in the ANGELS category, not Christmas decorations.
8. Please be aware that space for exhibits is limited, and we would appreciate your
cooperation with limiting the size of your entry. Exhibits deemed too large will not be
accepted.
9. All awards need not be presented if entries are not deemed to be of sufficient
quality.
10. You may only enter 5 pieces in a set.

11. Guard service is provided in this department and every precaution is taken to
protect all articles. The North Carolina State Fair nor any of its employees will be held
responsible for loss or damage to any articles, properties or persons participating in
this department.
Judges will not award a premium to an unworthy exhibit whether
there is competition or not.
The Fair Management reserves the right to reject any exhibit which they
feel does not reflect merit and which would not be a credit to both the
exhibitor and the Fair. Also, the right is reserved to reject exhibits which are
deemed objectionable or unsuitable pending inspection of the article to be
exhibited. Any article which proves to be misrepresented or falsely or
incorrectly classed will be rejected and the right of the exhibitor to further
participation in the Fair will be denied.
EXHIBITORS ENTRY GROUPS
Exhibitors of Handicrafts shall be divided into THREE groups for entry purposes.
"P"—To include all PROFESSIONALS—That is those connected, now or in the
past, with a crafts business or workshop as owner, instructor, attendant, etc. in a
capacity that would give the entrant unfair advantage over a hobbyist. If an entrant
has gained knowledge in the specific category entered by association with a business
or by being an instructor, or making items that are sold for personal monetary gain, the
entrant must enter as a PROFESSIONAL in that specific category.
"N"—Strictly for the NON PROFESSIONAL HOBBYIST. For those engaged only as
a hobbyist and not connected in any way with crafts business in that field or selling
pieces. If a person is handicapped, please attach a note to this effect to item being
entered.

WOODCARVING AND WORKING
DESIGN—For an entry to score well in design it should reveal why wood is the best
material from which to make it. Thus, the strength, direction of grain, expansion and
contraction tendency, color and weathering capabilities are to be thoughtfully
considered. Use of precious, fine wood is to be rewarded because it shows a
commitment to your idea. Low grade wood for fine projects is less rewarded.
CRAFTSMANSHIP FIT—Tight joinery using fundamentally sound construction is highly
rewarded; mechanical fasteners are less rewarded.
FINISH—Complete treatment of surfaces, including underside, is to be rewarded.
Sanding should be uniform. Finishes should be carefully applied without blemish.
