Additional information to the admission provisions for the Doctoral programmes (XXV ciclo)


Doctoral activities can be pursued in external institutions (i.e. not the organizing Departments or partner institutions) for no longer
than half of the total length of the Doctoral programme.
Doctoral students have to obtain the authorization for study periods at Italian or foreign institutions:
- either from the Academic Board for periods up to six months
- or from the Chair of the School/Course for periods minor than six months.
Doctoral programmes have a special budget for study periods abroad.
The University of Trieste however does not guarantee that the doctoral students wil be paid the 50% augmentation of their
scholarships for study periods abroad.

Scholarships are not paid from the beginning of the programme to January 1st 2009 to the students who do not obtain a positive
evaluation after the first year.
If students are suspended for more than 30 days or if they are excluded from the programme they cannot receive the scholarships.

Successful candidates can choose to receive either ordinary scholarships or EU scholarships or scholarships granted by
international institutions.

Al Doctoral students, including grant-holders, have to pay € 110 to the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia (see L. 549/95 and ff).
Students enrol ing to the first year have to present the ISEE declaration (stating the candidates’ economic positions) within 15 days
from the deadline for registration.
For the fol owing years doctoral students have to check the deadline for applying for fee reduction at
http://www.units.it/dottorati/?file=Istruzioni.htm. No personal notification wil be sent.
Candidates who give up the scholarships have to pay admission and attendance fees according to when they formal y renounce:
- If they renounce when registering they are no longer grant-holders and have to pay al the fees;
- If they renounce during the year they have to pay the fees from the fol owing academic year;
- If they renounce when enrol ing to the second or third year they have to pay the fees starting from that academic year.

Doctoral students have to submit their research activities to the Academic Board for approval.
If a Doctoral student stops attending his/her classes for over a month without justification, the Academic Board wil exclude him/her
from the programme.
At the end of every year the Academic Board evaluates the activities pursued by the student in order to admit him/her to the fol owing
year or else to the final exam (for students who are attending the final year). If the evaluation is negative, the student is excluded
from the programme.
Students have the right to:
- scholarships, if they fulfil the requirements;
- insurance coverage (as al the students enrol ed to the Università degli Studi di Trieste) through:
- Istituto Nazionale per l’Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro (I.N.A.I.L.) for injury risks (cf D.P.R. 1124/65 and ff);
- primaria Compagnia di Assicurazione per la Responsabilità Civile verso Terzi (R.C.T.) for civil liability to third parties,
excluding personal liability.

Please notice:
Students employed in health care (if authorized) need insurance covering professional risks. They are advised to turn to the
chair of the doctoral programme for further information. Before attending study periods abroad students are kindly requested
to ask details on insurance coverage to the PhD Office.
- access the workstations and computer services;
- have representatives within the Departments (under special provisions);
- canteen services;
- ask the Academic Board to intervene if there are conflicts with the supervisor/tutor. The Academic Board hears the parties (i.e.
the supervisor/tutor and the doctoral student) and makes a decision envisaging the possibility to change the supervisor/tutor.
