Spark-Ignited Natural Gas Engine Retrofit ("Conversion") Systems
The chart on the following three pages lists EPA- and CARB-certified systems available to "convert"/retrofit existing gasoline engines to run
either as dedicated natural gas engines or bi-fuel engines (capable of running on either natural gas or gasoline). EPA and CARB
certifications are for specific model years and installation time-periods.Unlike the unregulated "conversion kits" that were available from
dozens of manufacturers in the late-1970s through the mid-1990s, all gaseous fuel engine systems on the market today are engineered and
tested to comply with the same tough CARB/EPA emissions performance requirements as the large automobile manufacturers. Some of the
systems listed are for use in light-duty vehicles (<8500 pounds) and are therefore certified to a specific EPA- or CARB-designated emissions
level(e.g., ULEV, SULEV), which may have bearing on the amount of state or federal incentives available. Vehicles over 8500 pounds are
designated heavy-duty vehicles by EPA, or - under CARB's certification system - one of several graduated vehicle weight classifications
(e.g., medium-heavy-duty, heavy-heavy-duty, etc). For both jurisdictions, vehicles above 8500 pounds are not delineated further, e.g., as ULEV
Several engine families, such as the 6.0L GM units may be certified for use in LDVs (<8500 pounds, e.g., a 1500 series Silverado) or for use
in HDVs (>8500 pounds, e.g., GM's C/K 2500 utility chassis work truck). Only an engine certified for use in a HD application may be installed
in an HDV. All the systems certified for the GM 8.1L and the Ford 6.8L engines are considered HDV certifications. Furthermore, all SVOEMs'
systems may be installed before placing the vehicle into active service or afterward. System installations are usually handled by the firms
noted here or their qualified systems retrofitters. Contact manufacturers for more information on certification levels, applicable model years
and locations of qualified installers.
