Lore Con

A Word from the Head Skald
As I type this, five and six foot snow drifts are piled against the houses in my neighborhood. It’s hard to be-
lieve that in a few short months, it will be April and nominally spring. But it will, and it will be time for Lore
Con 3, too. It’s Year Three on our own and I’m very pleased to say we’re offering a greater variety of events
than ever before.
• Breaking news! Just before going to press, Lore Con confirmed that Steve Kenson, creator of Mutants &
Masterminds, developer for Green Ronin Publishing and long-time RPG author, will attend Lore Con as a
guest of honor.
• Xen’drik Expeditions, faction adventures from the world of Eberron, join our RPGA offerings, which also
include Living Greyhawk modules set in the March of Bissel and Sheldomar Valley
• Warmachine and Hordes tournaments, run by Privateer Pressganger and Lore Con Guest of Honor Hugh
H. Browne Jr.
• Friday Night Magic and a pair of Magic: the Gathering tournaments hosted by Quarterstaff Games.
• A trio of special GMs: Dr Nik and Rod Sheldon of Carnage Gaming offer roleplaying and board game
possibilities; and Gordon Dritschilo runs the adventure “Fear and Zombies in Las Vegas,” set within his
contribution to the All Flesh Must Be Eaten supplement Worlds of the Dead.
• The triumphant return to Lore Con of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean, the game of piratical warfare that
uses LEGO ships, including the Black Pearl herself.
Everyone on staff is very excited about this year. We’re working harder and doing more to make this the
best Lore Con yet for you, the gamers of Vermont, Canada, greater New England and every place from which
you flock to game.
We’ll see you in April!

Hotel and Convention Center
We return to the South Burlington Holiday Inn and Conference Center for Lore Con 3. We had a great time
last year, and look forward to an even better one in 2007!

As the Holiday Inn is a
combination hotel and conference
center, you can go straight from
your room to the gaming tables,
maybe stopping in for a quick
bite at the on-site restaurant. For
more information on the hotel
and its location, please see our
website.
Reserving a Room
We strongly recommend you
reserve your room for Lore Con
3 now. Working with the Holi-
day Inn, we have worked out a
convention rate of $85 per night
for Lore Con attendees. To get
the rate, call the hotel at their
number listed nearby and when
making your reservation, tell them you’re with Lore Con.

This convention rate is good until March 13, 2007. After then, you’ll have to pay the going
rates, which are typically $100+ a night. So get your reservation in now and save yourself an early morning
schlep to the convention!
Burlington, Vermont
Burlington (population 60,000, give or take) is the largest city in Vermont and is consistently voted among
the top ten most livable cities in the United States. It’s located in the northwestern corner of the state mere
minutes from the shores of Lake Champlain.

The convention center is minutes from downtown Burlington, where you can find all sorts of shop-
ping on the pedestrian-friendly Church Street Marketplace and in the Burlington Town Center mall, as well
as almost any kind of dining you care for, from institutions like Bove’s Cafe, famous for their sauce, to
trendy spots like Asiana House, which is rapidly gaining a cult following for its sushi offerings.

Lore Con

Board Games
BattleLore
Slot 2, Friday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–4. GM: Kreig Pinkham.
In a world that bridges history and fantasy, BattleLore puts you in command of a vast array of miniature troops on the
battlefields of Medieval Europe.

Assembling a group of wizened old Lore Masters—men of faith and magic, tricksters and grizzled warriors—is
only one of many challenges you’ll face. The proper deployment of troops, careful choice of allies, timely spell-casting
and good old-fashioned treachery are all important skills to master in entering a world of epic fantasy adventures!
Carcassone and Carcassone: the discovery
Slot 6, Sunday 9 am to 1 pm. Players: 2–6. GM: Carnage Gaming’s Rod Sheldon.

Carcassone is a strategy game set in the southern region of France. Build your cities, farm the land and guard the
roads. Once you have settled your own lands, time for Discovery. Travel to a new world and see what wonders lie
beyond.

Both Carcassone and Carcassone: The Discovery will be played during this session.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark, “Escape from Midnight Castle”
Slot 5, Saturday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–5. GM: Laban Tatro.

Lore Con’s very own Laban Tatro brings you a fiendish scenario of his own devising, in which you struggle against
dark sorcery and fell beasts, using this gritty dungeon-crawling board game from Fantasy Flight Games.

Long ago, a book containing the secret of bringing forth the Demon of Carnage was hidden to save the world.
But now . . . the five signs of the tome’s opening have taken place, and dark clouds loom over the kingdom.

Who will save the kingdom from the Demon of Carnage, should he be awakened? Are you one of the chosen
heroes of light, destined to confront and, perhaps, destroy the Demon of Carnage? There is only one way to find out.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark, “Quest for the Dragon Runes”
Slot 2, Friday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–5. GM: Jonathan Chiaravalle.

The High Lord Morgath has risen from the ashes and is once again threatening the Free Towns of the World. The cry
has gone out for Heroes from all walks of life to aid in the upcoming battle against the Hordes of Darkness.

The key to Morgath’s foul plan is the fabled Dragon Runes. With them he will be nigh unstoppable. You, and
many other groups of heroes have been tasked with the quest of recovering the runes from Morgath.

This intense Descent adventure will be run by the Evil Overlord Jonathan Chiaravalle. This is designed to be a
fun monster gauntlet which means there will be many deaths. Once a hero dies then the next person in line will bring
in their hero. Everyone will get a chance to play.
El Grande
Slot 6, Sunday 9 am to 1 pm. Players: 3–5. GM: Amos Parker.
In this Spiel des Jahres (1996) winner, players take on the roles of Grandes in medieval Spain. The king’s power is
flagging, and these powerful lords are vying for control of the various provinces. To that end, you draft caballeros
(knights) into your court and subsequently move them onto the board to help seize control of provinces. After every
third turn, the regions are scored, and after the ninth turn, the Grande with the most points is deemed the winner.
Frag, “The Taking of Orpheus Base”
Slot 6, Sunday 9 am to 1 pm. Players: 2–8. GM: Tyler Dion.

Orpheus Base, located on one of Jupiter’s smaller, less-regarded moons, is a sleepy outpost of the Terran Union.

Lore Con

Sleepy, that is, until a squad of Spinward separatists invade the base, trying to seize Dr. Narita’s top secret quantum
wormhole research. Naturally, it is up to Orpheus Base’s crack Terran Marines to protect the doctor, her research and
the base itself from the cowardly Spinward terrorists.

This is a team play version of Steve Jackson Games’ Frag, the first person shooter boardgame, and includes the
Death Match expansion.
A Game of Thrones
Slot 5, Saturday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–6. GM: Carnage Gaming’s Rod Sheldon.
A diplomatic/war game based on George RR Martin’s series of books, A Song of Ice and Fire. Do you have what it takes
to sit the Iron Throne? You need the shrewdness of the Lannisters and the military prowess of the Greyjoys. Winter is
coming . . . are you ready?
Pirate’s Cove
Slot 4, Saturday 2 pm to 6 pm. Players: 2–5. GM: Carnage Gaming’s Rod Sheldon.
From Days of Wonder comes this fun, colorful board game of pirates, cannonfire and plundered booty! Sail the high
seas, amass treasure and cargo, and then outfit your ship with more and better cannon and sails. You’ll need them,
too, when you run afoul of your fellow pirates or legends of the seas themselves like Blackbeard and the Flying Dutch-
man. Pirate’s Cove is easy to learn and swashbuckling good fun. Yar, me hearties, the high seas await!
Power Grid
Slot 3, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm. Players: 2–6. GM:
Carnage Gaming’s Rod Sheldon.

You run your own power company. Purchase your
power plants and build your grid over the United
States, France, Italy or Germany. What is the best
power source to use? Coal? Oil? Nuclear? Or maybe
garbage? There is always wind power . . . Power Grid
is a great game of economics and industry.
Puerto Rico
Slot 3, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm. Players: 3–5. GM:
Amos Parker.

The players are plantation owners in Puerto Rico in
the days when ships had sails. Growing up to five
different kind of crops (corn, indigo, coffee, sugar and
tobacco), they must try to run their business more
efficiently than their close competitors; growing crops
and storing them efficiently, developing San Juan
with useful buildings, deploying their colonists to
best effect, selling crops at the right time and, most
importantly, shipping their goods back to Europe for
maximum benefit.

A unique game system lets players choose
the order of the phases in each turn by allowing each
player to choose a role from those remaining when
it is their turn. No role can be selected twice in the
same round. The player who selects the best roles to
advance their position during the game will win.

Lore Con

Settlers of Catan 10th Anniversary Deluxe 3D Special Edition
Slot 2, Friday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–4. GM: Neil Carr

The classic title that kicked off the euro invasion of boardgaming, this is the deluxe chest set of Settlers of Catan where
all of the components are molded 3D miniatures. It provides all of the components to either play the standard game of
Settlers of Catan, or the expanded Cities and Knights version.
Tigris and Euphrates
Slot 4, Saturday 2 pm to 6 pm. Players: 2-4. GM: Amos Parker.
Arguably Reiner Knizia’s best game, this is certainly one of the highlights of his prolific career. The game is set in the
ancient fertile crescent with players building civilizations through tile placement.

Basically, players are given leaders in four different categories (farming, trading, religion, and government) and
must use them to collect victory points in these categories. However, your score at the end of the game is the number
of points in your weakest category, which encourages players not to get overly specialized.

AD&D 1st Edition Battlesystem, “The Defense of Drachenheim”
Slot 5, Saturday 8 pm to midnight. Players: 2–4. GM: Thomas A. Compter.
Imperial forces have established an outpost in the hinterlands of Drachenheim. It has been a long and snowy winter,
and the fort has been isolated for 3 months. The spring thaws have arrived, and an expedition has been sent to relieve
and resupply the fort. There are bands of rebels lurking in the hills though, waiting for an opportunity to pounce on
unsuspecting Imperial caravans.

Slot 2, Friday 2 pm to 6 pm. Players: 2–4. GM: Thomas A. Compter.
The small village of Tellin is close to the borderlands of the Northern March. As such, the villagers are used to raids
and other antagonisms from the various humanoid tribes to the north. They have a fairly well organized militia, and
are not too far from the castle of their lord, who is, of course, bound to protect them in times of peril.

However, the long winter has made the local orc and goblin tribes cold and bold, and they need food to sur-
vive. One might say they are desperate . . .
Classic Battletech, Battle at Bravo Six
Slot 4, Saturday 2 pm to 6 pm. Players: 2–8. GM: Matthew Goodrow.
Classic Battletech is a table top strategy game for two or more players. The game simulates combat in the 31st cen-

In this scenario a medium lance from House Kurita is attempting to seize a Davion supply depot in order to
support the Draconis Combine’s assault on Tancredi IV. A House Davion medium lance has been dispatched to inter-

rogue European treasure hunters on the way to civilization.

marvelous crossover game from Japan. A fantastic anime intro set to catchy music is the first thing you will no-

it, even if we don’t know what in the world is going on.
