Out-Patient Hospitals - J-Code Billing NDC
Dear South Dakota Medical Assistance Provider: “Important
Message - Please Read”
As mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), new rules require
providers who utilize a drug-related Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System
(HCPCS) J-Code when billing prescription drug products to include on the claim form the
relevant National Drug Code (NDC) of the drug.
For outpatient hospitals, rule implementation is July 1, 2008 and is effective for claim dates of
service July 1, 2008 and forward.
Claims that either don't have the NDC code or have an NDC code that does not relate to the
J-code will be denied.
