This course will seek to maintain and develop the general linguistic ability of the students through intensive practice of
their reading, writing, listening and oral skills. A thematic approach to the course will be adopted and the topics
chosen as vehicles for practice it is hoped will be of contemporary relevance and interest. There will also be a
grammar component with the aim of covering the grammatical structures considered relevant for the students at this
stage of their learning process. Within the Common European Framework, the level to be achieved in this course will
be that of C1 [http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/Linguistic/Source/Framework] [http://cvc.cervantes.es/obref/marco]. Students
will be trained to understand a wide range of more demanding texts.. They will be able to express themselves
fluently and use language effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

It is a prerequisite to have passed English Language III, both theory and practice, in order to be assessed in

English Language IV as it is an “asignatura llave”. Attendance is obligatory.

Assessment will be based on regular attendance, active participation, the course work and a final exam. Only
students who come to class regularly will be entitled to do oral presentations. Those who pass them satisfactorily
will not have to sit the final oral exam.
The mark obtained will be the 50% of the final grade of English Language IV. Both modules, theory and practice,
have to be passed independently. However, those students who pass the practical module, will have their mark
kept until December.
The “ficha” will have to be handed in during the first two weeks of the semester.

Reading: Apart from practising the general skills, it is hoped that the students will develop more of their

interpretive abilities through articles of a more complex and varied nature.

Writing: A general survey of the techniques of academic writing will be given in class.
•
Listening: Regular listening practice will be given on the topics discussed in class through a variety of
exercises –answering questions, note-taking and understanding specific vocabulary.
•
Speaking: Oral practice will be continuous throughout the course and students will be encouraged to debate
and exchange their ideas. They will give oral presentations on the topics dealt with in class.
•
There will be a combination of a course book together with original material given in class or for photocopying.
