Ngày Truyền Thống Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam 2006
Kể từ biến cố tháng 4 năm 1975, hàng triệu người Việt Nam đã phải bỏ nước ra đi để tìm kiếm một
đời sống tự do và trong số này, khoảng hơn phân nửa đã đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ trong một thời gian
ngắn, những người di dân Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ không những đã nhanh chóng ổn định đời sống mà còn
đóng góp cho xã hội tạm dung nhiều thành quả quan trọng về mọi phương diện như kinh tế, giáo dục, xã
hội, khoa học, kỹ thuật, v.v... Trong tác phẩm “Vietnamese Americans” do cơ sở Rourke Corporation tại
Florida xuất bản năm 1991, tác giả Susan Auerbach đã viết: “Các thành quả của người Việt trong khuôn
khổ học đường, trong lãnh vực khoa học kỹ thuật, và trong phạm vi kinh doanh đã gây phấn khởi cho
những người thuộc các sắc dân khác vừa đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ.” Trong một tác phẩm khác với nhan đề
“The Vietnamese Experience in America” do cơ sở xuất bản viện đại học Indiana ấn hành năm 1992 tại
Indianapolis, ông Paul Rutledge nhận định là “với sự thành công nhanh chóng của người Việt, chỉ trong
một thời gian ngắn, xã hội Hoa Kỳ sẽ được hưởng mối lợi gấp nhiều lần số ngân khoản chính phủ đã trợ
giúp họ trong vấn đề định cư.”
Thật vậy, như những nhận xét của các tác giả nêu trên, người Việt tỵ nạn đã thành công khá nhanh
chóng so với những người di dân khác và thành công về mọi lãnh vực, đặc biệt tại học đường. Hầu hết
những người di dân Việt Nam đã đến Hoa Kỳ với một số vốn nghèo nàn về Anh ngữ. Tuy nhiên, với tinh
thần hiếu học đã ăn sâu vào tâm khảm người Việt từ bao thế hệ, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn ngủi, họ đã
trở nên những học sinh, sinh viên xuất sắc tại các trường trung, đại học và sau khi tốt nghiệp, đã mang khả
năng của mình để cống hiến cho xã hội Hoa Kỳ. Trong hơn hai thập niên qua, thế hệ con em của những
người di dân Việt Nam đầu tiên đã dần dần trưởng thành và đang cố gắng nối tiếp truyền thống cha anh để
đạt được những thành quả tốt đẹp trong sự học.
Đầu năm 1997, qua sự liên lạc với ban giám hiệu các trường trung học ở Houston và vùng phụ cận,
hội VHKHVN được biết số học sinh Việt Nam tốt nghiệp với thứ hạng thủ khoa (valedictorian) và á khoa
(salutatorian), niên khóa 1996-1997, chiếm một tỉ lệ khá cao so với các sắc dân khác. Trước sự kiện này,
hội VHKHVN đã tổ chức một buổi tiệc vào ngày 3 tháng 8 năm 1997 để tuyên dương và phát thưởng các
em học sinh ưu tú kể trên. Mục đích chính của buổi tiệc là để khuyến khích tất cả các học sinh, sinh viên
Việt Nam chuyên cần hơn trong sự học. Trong buổi tiệc, tiến sĩ Lee Brown, thị trưởng thành phố Houston,
đã phát biểu trên diễn đàn là ông rất ngạc nhiên và vô cùng thán phục trước thành tích vẻ vang của các
học sinh người Mỹ gốc Việt.
Ý nghĩa và sự thành công của buổi tiệc năm đầu tiên đã gây được tiếng vang đáng kể, không những
tại thành phố Houston mà còn lan đến các thành phố có đông người Việt cư ngụ tại Hoa Kỳ và tại một vài
quốc gia khác. Sau đó, được sự khích lệ của quý đồng hương, hội VHKHVN quyết định sẽ cố gắng tiếp tục
chương trình tuyên dương cùng phát thưởng các học sinh ưu tú hằng năm. Chương trình này sẽ được bao
gồm trong các buổi tiệc với danh xưng “Ngày Truyền Thống Hội VHKHVN,” được tổ chức vào mỗi đầu
tháng Tám. Trong 10 năm vừa qua, Ngày Truyền Thống đã có dịp tuyên dương thành tích xuất sắc của 170
em học sinh trung học Việt Nam tại Houston và vùng phụ cận. Năm nay, nhân dịp kỷ niệm 10 năm thực
hiện chương trình này, hội VHKHVN hân hạnh giới thiệu thành tích xuất sắc của hai mươi tám (28) em học
sinh ưu tú của niên khóa 2005-2006. Đặc biệt năm nay là năm kỷ niệm lần thứ 10 Hội thực hiện chương
trình ý nghĩa này và công tác tổ chức do chính các em học sinh xuất sắc các niên học trước phụ trách.
Với chương trình tuyên dương và phát thưởng các học sinh Việt Nam ưu tú, hội VHKHVN hy vọng sẽ
ít nhiều góp phần vào việc khuyến khích các em trau giồi sự học để làm thăng tiến cộng đồng người Việt
chúng ta tại Houston và vùng phụ cận.

Introduction
After 1975, there have been large waves of Vietnamese refugees escaping from Vietnam to the United
States, Canada, and other western countries. Since then, the Vietnamese-American population has
grown tremendously and contributed a great deal to the adopted homeland. With a population of more
than one million, the Vietnamese-American communities in the United States have started building
their lives and contributed to the society in all different fields. The second and third generations of
Vietnamese-American have increased in population and comprised a major part of these communities.
In 1997, The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association organized the first Vietnamese-American
Youth Recognition Luncheon to recognize the academic achievement of 13 Vietnamese-American
students who graduated from more than 45 local high schools in Houston as Valedictorians or
Salutatorians. Mayor Lee Brown was the Keynote Speaker for this event. The event has been very well
received by the community and had a very positive impacts on the Asian youth in general and the
Vietnamese-American youths in particular. The event emphasized the importance of education and
encouraged the youth to excel academically. In the past nine years, we have continued this program as
an Annual event of our organization. This program has recognized 140 Vietnamese-American students
in the past nine years for their excellent academic achievements from local high schools.
This year, Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is proud to present the Tenth Annual Youth
Excellence Recognition program. In this event, we will present a slide show featuring the highlights of
the Youth Recognition program in the past nine years to celebrate the Tenth anniversary of this
program. We also would like to encourage the younger generations of Vietnamese-Americans to excel
in education by following the footsteps of the outstanding academic and leadership achievements of the
Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as Valedictorian or Salutatorian in the
Greater Houston and vicinity. Other scholarship programs will also be presented in this event. The
past honorees and will highlight the event with spectacular cultural performances and entertainment.
The Recognition Luncheon is organized on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Kim Son Ballroom, 1603 St.
Emanuel, Houston, Texas, from 11:30am to 2:30 pm.

Giới thiệu về Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam
Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam (VHKHVN) là một tổ chức bất vụ lợi được thành lập từ năm 1990 tại Houston.
Hiện nay HVHKHVN có hơn 500 hội viên, đa số là các chuyên viên trẻ cư ngụ tại thành phố Houston, Texas và tại các
tiểu bang khác trên toàn Hoa Kỳ. Ngoài trung tâm sinh hoạt tại thành phố Houston, Hội còn có phân hội tại các thành
phố Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, Memphis, San Diego và Washington DC.
Hội VHKHVN được thành lập nhằm các mục đích sau:
−Tạo sự thông cảm và hợp tác trong cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Việt, đặc biệt trong hai phương diện văn hóa và khoa
học.
−Cung cấp một môi trường đa diện nơi các chuyên viên trẻ trao đổi ý kiến, chia sẻ kinh nghiệm, và tham dự vào việc
xây dựng một cộng đồng Việt Nam vững mạnh tại hải ngoại.
−G6p phần vào công cuộc tái thiết xứ sở sau khi các cơ chế dân chủ, tự do đã được bảo đảm và thực thi tại Việt Nam.
Để đạt được các mục đích nêu trên, Hội VHKHVN đề ra các mục tiêu sau:
−Khuyến khích sự hợp tác và trao đổi khả năng, kinh nghiệm giữa các chuyên viên Mỹ gốc Việt, qua sự tham gia vào
các chương trình và sinh hoạt xây dựng cộng đồng VN vững mạnh tại Hoa Kỳ nói chung và tại Houston nói riêng.
−Bảo tồn và phát huy văn hóa Việt Nam trong các chương trình và sinh hoạt định kỳ.
−Khuyến khích sự tham gia vào các chương trình sinh hoạt cộng đồng, phát huy tinh thần trách nhiệm của giới trẻ đối
với xã hội, cộng đồng và tổ quốc.
−Tham dự hoặc hỗ trợ những sinh hoạt nhằm đòi hỏi một nền tự do và dân chủ chân chính cho Việt Nam.
−Tham dự vào các sinh hoạt chung với cộng đồng bản xứ hoặc với các cộng đồng Á Châu hay sắc tộc khác.
Những mục tiêu trên đã và đang được thực hiện qua các chương trình sinh hoạt sau:
−Phát hành tạp chí Hướng Việt mỗi năm để trao đổi ý kiến, thông tin giữa các hội viên. Tạp chí Hướng Việt là cơ quan
ngôn luận của Hội VHKHVN.
−Tổ chức các phiên họp khoáng đại định kỳ mỗi tam cá nguyệt để các hội viên đóng góp ý kiến, hoặc đề nghị về các
chương trình hay sinh hoạt của Hội.
−Tham dự các chương trình, sinh hoạt về văn hóa thường niên như Asian American Festival và Mardi Gras Festival,
hội chợ Tết Việt Nam.
−Tổ chức các buổi hội thảo về các đề tài khoa học, kỹ thuật để chia sẻ kinh nghiệm giữa các hội viên
−Tham dự vào các sinh hoạt cộng đồng khác như các chương trình gây quỹ từ thiện, hội chợ Tết Việt Nam, và các
chương trình khác, như các lớp điện toán và văn chương, lịch sử.
−Tổ chức các sinh hoạt nhằm phát triển khả năng sinh hoạt và tổ chức của hội viên như các chương trình của Nhóm
Hùng Biện Việt Nam (Toastmaster group), chương trình Đêm Cà Phê, chương trình tổ chức trại hè phát triển kỹ năng
về lãnh đạo toàn Bắc Mỹ “trại Lên Đường”.
−Tổ chức Buổi tiệc tuyên dương học sinh xuất sắc mỗi năm qua chương trình Ngày Truyền Thống Hội VHKHVN.

OVERVIEW OF VIETNAMESE CULTURE AND SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
Introduction
The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is a 501-c(3) non-profit Vietnamese American organization founded in 1990. It
has over 500 members which consist of a majority of young Vietnamese American professionals in Houston and in other states of
the US and Canada. The VCSA is based in Houston, Texas. Beside the Headquarter office in Houston, VCSA has four other chap-
ters located in Dallas, Austin, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; San Diego, California; and Washington DC.
Mission Statement
Vietnamese Culture and Science Association promotes excellence in education, leadership and skills development through culture
and science. Our organization encourages multi-generational and cross-cultural collaborations. We foster civic participation in the
mainstream and Vietnamese America.
Objectives
VCSA’s objectives are to:
· Preserve and develop Vietnamese heritage and culture for the Vietnamese American young adults and Vietnamese descen-
dants by establishing various programs and activities.
· Promote cooperation among Vietnamese American professionals in exchanging their skills, participating in the programs
and activities to build a strong Vietnamese community in North America in general, and in Texas and other states of U.S. in
particular.
· Encourage participation in community programs and activities and build a strong sense of civic responsibility among Viet-
namese Americans.
· Collaborate with other Asian communities and the mainstream society.
Activities and Programs
− Publish an annual magazine, “Huong Viet”, to act as the official voice of the VCSA.
− Organize quarterly general meeting to obtain inputs and ideas from members regarding programs and activities of the VCSA.
− Organize regular Vietnamese Literature, History classes for young Vietnamese Americans to learn more about the heritage lan-
guage and Computer classes for the Vietnamese community.
− Organize monthly Toastmaster program to improve the communication skills for members.
− Organize regular cultural events and participate in the annual cultural events such as the American Asian Festival and the Mardi
Gras Festival.
− Organize regular professional development workshops to discuss on Science and Technology topics and to share ideas and skills
among the professionals.
− Organize Annual National Youth Leadership Development Camp “Len Duong”.
− Organize Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon.
− Participate in all community related activities such as charitable fund raising events, the Vietnamese New Year Festival, the
Asian American Festival and other Asian communities’ events.

Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Trần Hương bắt đầu dạy tại phân khoa Sư phạm Đại học Cali-
fornia State tại Long Beach kể từ mùa thu năm 1998. Luận án tiến sĩ của bà
nghiên cứu về ảnh hưởng của các yếu tố chủng tộc, ngôn ngữ, văn hoá, và bản
sắc trên sự phát triển nghiệp vụ của các nhà giáo gốc thiểu số trong xã hội Hoa
Kỳ, đặc biệt là những người không sinh đẻ tại Mỹ.
Giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương phụ trách giảng dạy các môn căn bản sư phạm
và các khoá học lấy bằng giảng dạy cho các giáo viên trung học đệ nhất và đệ
nhị cấp. Ngoài công việc giảng dạy, giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương còn điều
hành chương trình huấn luyện giáo chức về các môn Phát triển Ngôn ngữ và
Học thuật trong Giao thoa Văn hoá (CLAD) hay Chương trình Phát triển Ngôn
ngữ Học thuật Song ngữ Á Châu (BCLAD). Trong cả hai cương vị giảng dạy
và điều hành, giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương đều tận tụy tìm cách tuyển mộ, đào
tạo và phát triển tuyển sinh sư phạm thuộc thành phần thiểu số, nhất là gốc Á
châu nhằm đa dạng hóa lực lượng giáo chức tương ứng với tình trạng đa chủng của học sinh tại California.
Trước khi giảng dạy tại Đại học Sư phạm Long Beach, giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương đã từng giảng dạy các
cấp từ tiểu học, trung học tại các khu học chánh Chula Vista, San Diego và Long Beach. Bà cũng từng giữ
chức vụ điều hành tại văn phòng trung ương khu học chánh San Diego và long Beach.
Khi còn dạy trung học tại Long Beach, giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương đã được đồng nghiệp bầu là Nhà giáo
Xuất Sắc Toàn quốc, và Nhà giáo Xuất Sắc môn Anh ngữ là Sinh ngữ thứ hai năm 1994. Chương trình tuyên
dương giáo chức toàn quốc do tổ chức Walt Disney tô/ chức hàng năm.
Giáo sư Nguyễn Trần Hương đã từng nhận được những giải thưởng sau:
Who’s Who of American Women, 1994-đến nay;
Who’s Who in American Education, 1996-1997;
Achievement Award, Southeast Asian Resource Action Center, Washington, DC, September 2005,
nhân dịp kỷ niệm 30 năm ngày Tị nạn Đông Dương tại Mỹ và kỷ niệm năm thứ 25 ban hành đạo luật Tị
nạn Đông Dương.
Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Trần Hương được chính quyền Clinton bổ nhiệm làm Nghiên cứu sinh Cao cấp tại Bộ giáo
dục Liên bang từ năm 1995-1996, trong Vụ Song ngữ và Sinh ngữ cho dân Thiểu số, trực tiếp dưới quyền
Bộ trưởng Giáo dục Richard Riley. Trong cương vị này giáo sư Hương đã có dịp phản ảnh nguyện vọng của
giáo chức trong công tác ấn định Mục tiêu Giáo dục Toàn quốc năm 2000, chú trọng vào nâng cao chất

lượng giảng dạy, cải tiến các chương trình phát triển giáo chức chuyên nghiệp, và nâng cao cơ hội cho học
sinh thiểu số học Anh ngữ.
Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Trần Hương đã kinh qua rất nhiều trở ngại để đạt được vai trò lãnh đạo trong nhiều phạm vi
của ngành giáo dục. Vì bà thực sự am hiểu những thử thách vô cùng lớn lao của di dân khi hội nhập vào
dòng chính, qua chính kinh nghiệm bản thân cũng như nghề nghiệp, giáo sư Hương tận lực đóng góp vào
việc cải tiến phẩm chất giáo dục và cơ hội thăng tiến cho mọi học sinh.

Since the fall of 1998, Dr. Nguyen has been a faculty member of the College of Education at California State
University, Long Beach. Her research interest is in how race, language, culture, and identity impact the de-
velopment of ethnic minority teachers particularly foreign-born -- in U.S. contexts. She has been teaching
foundations of education courses and post-baccalaureate credential courses for Single Subject (secondary)
and Multiple Subject (elementary) teacher candidates. In addition, she has been supervising pre-service
teachers seeking the Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) or Asian Bilingual
Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD). In her teaching and supervisory roles, she
has dedicated herself to recruiting, developing, and retaining candidates from minority backgrounds, par-
ticularly Asian Americans, to diversify the teaching force to reflect the student population in California pub-
lic schools.
Prior to coming to CSULB, she had been a classroom teacher for over two decades, at the elementary, sec-
ondary, and adult levels in three different California urban school districts (Chula Vista, San Diego, and
Long Beach). She had also served as a central office administrator both in San Diego and in Long Beach.
While teaching at a high school in Long Beach, she was nominated by her peers to be the 1994 National
Outstanding Teacher of the Year and the National Outstanding Teacher in Foreign Language/English as a
Second Language. This yearly event was sponsored by the Walt Disney American Teacher Awards.

Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Southeast Asian refugee resettlement in the U.S. and the 25th

In 1995-1996, Dr. Nguyen was appointed as a Senior Fellow by the Clinton administration. She served at
the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. in the Office of Bilingual Education and Language
Minority Affairs (formerly OBEMLA, now OELA), under the leadership of U.S. Secretary of Education Rich-
ard Riley. In this capacity, Dr. Nguyen had the opportunity to lend a teacher’s voice to Goals 2000 policy
initiatives, specifically strengthening teacher quality, enhancing professional teacher development pro-
grams, and improving the quality of educational opportunities for English language minority students.
Dr. Nguyen has had to overcome multiple barriers to assume leadership roles in a variety of educational do-
mains. She truly understands the tremendous challenges non-mainstream individuals face, both personally
and professionally, in gaining membership into U.S. society and into their profession. She is committed to
improving the quality of education and opportunities for all students.

Le Quang-Viet Andrew, Valedictorian at James E. Taylor High School, Katy
ISD, born on September 8, 1987 in Dallas, TX to Mr. Le Quang Hung and
Mrs. Le Ha Kim-Chi. Extracurricular Activites/Hoạt động ngoại khoá:
Class President; Latin Club President; Second- Degree Black Belt in Tae
Kwon Do; National Honors Society . Scholarship and Awards/Học bổng và
phần thưởng: Asian Chamber of Commerce; Chevron Reach Scholarship;
Boston University Trustee Scholarship; Pittsburgh Presidential Scholarship.
University and Major/Trường đại học và chuyên ngành: Harvard University,
Majoring in Neuroscience. Special interests & hobbies/Sở thích: I play the
saxophone, work out, play pick-up basketball, volunteer at Texas Children’s
Hospital, and spend time with my friends and family. Most Significant
Achievement: I would say it’s a tie between getting into Harvard and being
my class’ Valedictorian, the first Vietnamese person to do so in the history of
my school. Goal: I’ve always dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon, but I definitely want to donate much of
my time performing healthcare services for the poverty-stricken in Vietnam. Special Thought: I would just
like to thank my parents for all they have done for me. They have always been there for me, supported me, and
most importantly, loved me unconditionally. They have sacrificed so much so that I could grow up here in
America, and I only hope to make them proud of me.

area. We were able to collect around 400 pints of blood and each pint can save three lives. I enjoyed doing this
because I helped make a huge difference when I didn’t believe I could. Goal: My goal in the future is to be-
come a doctor. I want to go back to countries such as Vietnam and do charity-work through medical assis-
tance. I feel that it is my obligation to help the people of my race when I have been so privileged with opportu-

This marks the 10th anniversary of the Vietnamese Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon.
As the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association celebrates this achievement, we wonder
where the former recipients are and what they are currently doing. As we polled them, we left
impressed. These are definitely the new generation of Vietnamese leaders!
Le Mong Huy (Willy), was the Salutatorian of Alief Kerr High School in
the year 1997. Considered by many to be the “first son” of VCSA, he is
President Hung’s oldest son and first Youth Excellence Recognition Pro-
gram recipient. Willy has served as the MC for this program as well as a
coordinator twice.
Willy graduated University of California Berkeley with a bachelors in
economics. He graduated University of Texas with a J.D. in 2004 and is
currently working for the Social Security Administration as an Assistant
Regional Counsel.

month, an event that drew a large number of VCSA guests.
Pham, Anh Tuan (Salutatorian Hastings High School 1997) and Pham Kim Van (Salutatoraian Hastings High
School 2001) are siblings. Tuan graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center with a Doctor
of Dental Surgery Degree cum Laude and practices in Dallas. Kim Van is currently working at the Ernst and
Young Houston office as an accountant after graduating the Business Honors Program at the University of
Texas at Austin.

Bui Dana, a recipient in 1997, graduated the
University of St Thomas with a triple major in
Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. She
also double minored in Theology and Philoso-
phy. She is about to start her second year of
med school at UT Houston. She has been one
of the MCs for VVDV.
Nguyen Thy Elizabeth was the Salutato-
rian of South Houston High School in
2000. She is also a second year med stu-
dent at UT Houston. She has been a mem-
ber of VCSA for 6 years, helping with the
reception team for VVDV. She is also
Pham Tuan Huy’s cousin.
The beautiful, artistic, talented and extremely funny (in each their own way) Do sisters are a staple of the Viet-

Linh Thu graduated from Rice with a double major in Asian Studies and Political Science. She completed her
law degree at the University of Texas in 2004 (with Willy). Linh Thu is currently pursuing her MBA at the
University of Houston.
Linh Thi graduated from Rice in 2004 with a degree in Biology. She attended the Parsons School of Design in
NYC for a year while starting to work in the fashion industry. She is currently assistant designer at Yeohlee, a
women’s ready to wear designer. However, since she misses Houston and her family, Linh Thi plans to return
to Houston and start a fashion house that expresses a Vietnamese American aesthetic. As you can tell, she
likes to karate chop things.
Linh Dan is currently in the midst of a 5 year architecture program at Rice University. She is known to her
friends as the local Vietnamese language expert with impeccable taste in clothing. She refuses to wear jeans of
any sort. We have tried to change her ways to no avail.

Nguyen Bich Chi was the Valedictorian of
Alief Hastings High School in 2000. She
graduated UPENN in 2004 with a degree in
finance. She is currently a Strategic Business
Analyst for AIG’s Domestic Brokerage Group
in NYC. She loves turtles. In the past, she has
worked for VCSA on environmental issues
that affected the Vietnamese community.
Nguyen Cong Hung was the Valedictorian of
Deer Park High School in 2000. She gradu-
ated Harvard University with a degree in
Economics and a minor in Women’s studies.
She is currently in Minneapolis, MN working
in the marketing department of General Mills.
She enjoys being a camp counselor, traveling,
reading, and EATING (especially oysters).
Le Thanh Thuy was a recipient in 2002.
She has just started her first year in the 7
year MD-PhD program at the University
of Texas at Houston. This prestigious
program is completely tuition-free. Thuy
has been a MC for VVDV in the past.
Dao Harry was the Valedictorian of Dobie
High School in 2004. He attended Yale Uni-
versity. Upon graduating, he was accepted
into John Hopkins Medical School. He is cur-
rently in his third year, taking good care of
his patients. Harry is an avid photographer
and is known for taking candid pictures dur-
ing VCSA meetings. A former VVDV chair,
Harry has been instrumental in keeping this
program running. He’s also a heck of a cook.
Nguyen Anh Ngoc-Anh was the Salutatorian of Clear Brook High
School in 2003. She is a senior at Rice University, majoring in Biochem-
istry. This March, she was selected by VCSA as a scholarship winner for
her community service in the Vietnamese Community. She was chosen to
represent VCSA in an all-expense paid workcamp where she built
schools for underprivileged children. Anh has been a panelist in VCSA’s
college forum, a moderator for Vietnamese-American career day, an MC
for VVDV and a coordinator for VVDV in the past. She plans to attend
medical school next year. Anh is known for her rambunctious energy and
yest for life. And her evil, crackling laugh.

Pham Thuy Trang was the Valedictorian of Mayde Creek High School in 2000.
She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Computer Science and a
minor in Psychology. She is currently working at an IT consulting firm in San Jose,
California.
In her spare time, she likes to rock climb, make poetry and dance. She is part of the
steering committee of Hands On Bay Area’s tutoring program. She is also a college
application/scholarship mentor at BUILD, an organization that helps under-
privileged students with their college and scholarship applications. Trang is co-
director of the Vera Tran Memorial Foundation. She has been a MC of VVDV and
a coordinator of the event.
She plans to buy a house for her parents in Houston in the next year.
Pham Tuan Huy was the Valedictorian of Alief Elisk High School in 2000. He
graduated from MIT in 2004 with a degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer
Science and a degree in Philosophy. He is currently enjoying his job as a DSP
Marketing Manager at Texas Instruments. It is a wonderful place to work!
Huy is on the Executive Board of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Associa-
tion as the Chairman of Youth Programs. He is also a member of Sunflower Mis-
sion, a non-profit group dedicated to improving education in Vietnam. He also
volunteers often as a counselor/mentor in such programs as Youth Leadership
Conference, Rice Leadership Program and Len Duong Camp.
Huy has already bought his parents a home in Houston. He hopes that will stop
his parents from shouting at him about potential marriage opportunities.

GREATLAND INVESTMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Purpose: To assist and encourage students of Vietnamese descent to excel in scholastic achievement, leader-
ship qualities, and community involvement, especially to those who have significant financial need.
Outline:
1. Greatland Investment, Inc. will award $1000.00 scholarship to high school students who demon-
strate excellence in academic achievement, specifically in the top 10% of the graduating class, not
including valedictorian and salutatorian.
2. CSL Property Management Group will award $1000.00 scholarship to graduating high school stud
ents who maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA, and have significant financial need.
3. Applicants were evaluated by their scholastic achievements, leadership qualities, community in-
volvement, writing proficiency, and a personal interview for semi-finalists.
Qualifications:
1. Students of Vietnamese descent who are residing in the Greater Houston Metropolitan area, and
graduating from an accredited high school or secondary school in May 2006.
2. Enroll as full time undergraduate student sin an accredited college, university, or an institution of
higher learning in the United States in the Fall of 2006.

THE THUY NGUYEN SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship has been established by Cuong Trinh, Trang Trinh, Quyen Trinh and An
Trinh in memory of their beloved mother, Mrs. Thuy Nguyen.
In 1975, Thuy Nguyen fled Vietnam and started a new life in the United States along
with her husband and their four children. To support their family, Mr. Ky Trinh and
Mrs. Nguyen each worked at two full-time jobs to provide for their children. With her
background and in those circumstances, Mrs. Nguyen saw clearly the benefits of an edu-
cation, and she strongly encouraged her children to take advantage of the opportunities
America provided by excelling in their academic work. This focus on education was
one of the enduring gifts to her children. They are greatly indebted to their mother and
have created this scholarship program to honor their mother and to pass on her legacy.
Candidate Eligibility:
• High School senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
• Descendant of at least one Vietnamese parent
• Family annual income of less than $20,000

MY AND THOM NGUYEN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP
Inspired by the support of their mother and father during their collegiate years, the My and Thom Nguyen academic
scholarship was created by Pauline and Jennifer Nguyen in December of 2005. Jennifer was the Valedictorian of Alief-
Elsik High School and a Youth Excellence Award recipient in 2005. The scholarship is a need-bind, merit-based schol-
arship seeking to honor the accomplishments of an Asian-American female in the Houston metropolitan area. The judg-
ing criteria placed extracurricular diversity, academic scholarship, and an implicit desire for intellectual growth as the
most important factors in the selection process. Along with grades and standardized test scores, applicants were required
to submit an essay with the option of selecting a previously written piece of any length or subject that is of particular im-
portance. With this year’s applicant pool consisting of nearly a dozen valedictorians, several National Merit Scholars,
and students with acceptance letters from Universities across the nation, the extra curricular activities and essay selection
of the students.
Congratulations to Amelia K Sofjan for winning the scholarship. Amelia K. Sofjan graduated salutatorian of her class at
Klein High School. An active member of the Klein High School Orchestra, Amelia is an accomplished, self-taught vio-
linist who has won accolades at solo and ensemble competitions for four consecutive years. Amelia is also an accom-
plished student having received the National Merit Scholarship, Advanced Placement Scholar Award, and the Presiden-
tial Scholar Award. She was also an active member in numerous clubs and organizations at Klein High School including
the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Key Club. Perhaps most impressive about her resume are the
circumstances that surrounded her accomplishments -- Amelia immigrated to the United States from Indonesia just six
years ago.

Mrs. Duy-Loan Le, Texas Instruments Senior Fellow, established the Dao-Le Scholarship Fund in 1999 to
help provide education for children in the third world, specifically for those in South America and Africa. The
name of the fund is in honor of her father, Mr. Thanh Thien Le, who has taught Duy-Loan the importance of a
good education at the young age of 5 and her husband, Mr. Tuan N. Dao, who has taught her the meaning of
unconditional love.
In 2000, Mrs. Duy-Loan Le decided that a portion of this fund will be dedicated to the "Dao-Le Scholarship:
Best Of The Best" to be awarded at the annual Youth Excellence Recognition luncheon sponsored by The
Vietnamese Cultural and Science Association. This scholarship not only honors the outstanding scholastic
achievement of the recipient but also recognizes the hardship he or she must endure and overcome along the
way. Accomplishment achieved through hardship and obstacles is the reason this scholarship is titled 'BEST
OF THE BEST’.

Vera Tran Memorial Foundation

Vera Tran was born on April 22, 1982 in
McKinney Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Lam Tran.
She graduated Salutatorian from Michael
DeBakey High School for Health Profes-
sions in 2000. She was a VCSA Youth Ex-
cellence Recognition Award Recipient in
2000, and joined VCSA afterwards and be-
came the Director of Social Services. Every
summer, she met up with former recipients
to help organize the Youth Excellence Rec-
ognition Program.
She was in her last year of studies at the
University of Houston, Baylor-Houston Pre-
Medical Academy, majoring in Biology,
when the tragic accident occurred. On April
15, 2003, one week before her 21st birth-
day, Vera tragically died in a car accident that occurred when an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign. Though we
mourn the unfulfilled goals she had yet to achieve, we celebrate her enormous contributions to our lives and
her love for humanity.
Vera dedicated her life to community service. In the summer she would work in a nutrition research lab at the
Children’s Nutrition Research Center. She was always a smiling, helpful and cheerful volunteer. The Chil-
dren’s Nutrition Research Center has since named an internship in her honor. Since November 2002, she
was involved with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Foundation-Student Global AIDS Walk Committee. She was
the City Director (Fundraising, Marketing, Recruitment, Logistic planning) of the group of undergraduate stu-
dents to coordinate a Houston AIDS walk to benefit clinics in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In November
2001 she helped to organize a Fund Raising Drive in Houston to raise funds for the flood victims in Vietnam.
She helped to raise more than $25,000 for the flood victims in Vietnam. She also has been the initiator and
leader of the “Meals for the Homeless” project every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday since 2001. Her
sudden departure has greatly impacted so many people whose lives have been touched by her.
Vera Tran was a role-model, an inspiration, and a friend to all who met her. She fearlessly took on life armed
with only love and compassion. Vera greeted everyone she met with a smile – a smile that could light up an
entire room. She had an immaculate soul and a song in her heart. This is how Vera will be remembered by
her family and friends, as well as the Vietnamese community at large.
Her demise was a tragic loss that resonated throughout the community. In 2003, 2000 VCSA Youth Excel-
lence Recognition recipients Trang Pham and Huy Pham created the Vera Tran Memorial Foundation Schol-
arship. With a generous donation from Vera’s father, and yearly contributions from Huy and Trang, we hope
to continue this annual scholarship going.
The $2,000 scholarship recognizes a graduating student of Vietnamese descent, with an excellent academic
record and a track record of compassion and initiative in community service. The ideal candidate encom-
passes Vera’s twin commitments of academic excellence and community service.

“You be the change you wish to see in the world”
Growing up, it was always difficult to understand the “ancient” teachings of the Vietnamese culture especially having been
born in a “modernized” country. However, that didn’t erase the obligation I felt to make my parents and grandparents proud. Not
only proud in the way that I would become successful, but to the extent that they felt that their sacrifices were worth something. My
grandmother and grandfather had to work for two dollars and ten cents an hour when they first came to America in a shoe factory.
My dad woke up at four o’clock in the morning before his classes started to work at the post office and then would go straight from
school to work at McDonald’s. My mom worked at a convenient store everyday, took care of her younger siblings, and cooked for
the family while going to school. With all the hardships and struggles of being an immigrant to a new nation, my parents still gradu-
ated from college and are still working hard till this day.
I felt the only way to appreciate their sacrifices was to work my hardest at every opportunity I received. My dad always told
me, “A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are meant for.” So to this day I take every opportunity to try to come closer to
achieving success in life. As a student, the most important opportunity is a great education. I have always strived for academic excel-
lence. When I was younger, it felt as if I was making the straight A’s only for my parents. But as I mature, I realize that success aca-
demically is rewarding to me. In high school, I literally walked in on the first day of class with a mindset that I would be valedicto-
rian. However, my reward was not only through my grades, but also the knowledge I had gained through pushing myself to learn
more than just the teacher curriculum. I have taken all the Honor and AP classes that were available such as Calculus BC, Biology II,
Latin Literature, Latin Virgil, Macroeconomics, and many others. I have earned over 30 hours of credit through College Board AP
tests making me a sophomore already in college. I have been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honor and will soon be recognized
as an AP Nation Scholar, the highest honor. I am a recipient of the James A. Edmond Scholarship and the Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo Scholarship. Through all hard work and determination, I not only reached my goal of becoming valedictorian, but also
earned the highest GPA in the history of my high school.
However in the past four years, I’ve had fellow classmates who just didn’t believe that I deserved to be valedictorian. To
them, I did not fit the stereotypical valedictorian who stays home and studies all the time. I didn’t mind what people thought because
I prided myself in the fact that I was a well rounded student. Not only did I succeed academically, but I held many leadership roles
and participated in a variety of school clubs. I was voted Co-President of the National Honor Society and Vice-President of the
Speech and Debate team. I was also voted junior and senior class officer and President of the North One House. I was also Civiliza-
tion coordinator of Latin Club and participated in student government and the Red Cross Club. I was even a varsity member of our
school’s drill team and freshman mentor. Under these clubs, I was also recognized academically. In Debate, I had received many tro-
phies among which I won second place in parliamentary debate and have been recognized as a National Forensic League Member
with Excellence. In Latin, I am recognized nationally as a gold and silver medalist in the National Latin Exam and have qualified for
state in Latin Certamen. Through these clubs, I coordinated middle school debate tournaments, dances, senior fundraisers, spirit
week, prom, and most importantly community service projects.
Fortunately through participation in organizations such as the National Honor Society and the Red Cross Club, I have found
more opportunities to serve the community. I always felt that there were few opportunities to pay my civic duty until I started look-
ing for them. I have coordinated drives for victims of Katrina such as Adopt-A-Family and a school supply drive. I helped raised
32,000 dollars for Katrina victims through my school which made Westside nationally acknowledged on CNN, the New York Times,
the Houston Chronicle, and many other major newspapers. I’ve also tutored and judged at science fairs. However the most rewarding
service was coordinating blood drives through the Gulf Coast Region Blood Bank. I have co-led the past three blood drives at my
school. I was hospitality and advertisement for the fall 2004 Blood Drive at Westside High School. In the spring of 2005, I co-led the
blood drive. I handled everything from recruiting volunteers for committee headpersons, volunteers, and food/drink donations. I also
led the task for recruitment of blood donors within our school and to the outside community. The blood drive was an instant success.
We had local news channels come to broadcast about our blood drive and we had signs posted through the community. The spring
2005 blood drive became the LARGEST HIGH SCHOOL-HELD BLOOD DRIVE IN THE GULF COASTAL REGION! WE
HELD THE SECOND LARGEST BLOOD DRIVE IN THE HOUSTON METROPOLITAN AREA! We were able to collect over
400 pints of blood and each pint can save three lives. This project took the most work and the most leadership skills, but the outcome
was far more than I could ever have imagined. I enjoyed doing this because I helped make a huge difference which I didn’t believe I
could. Recently, this past year, I was able to give blood for the first time. I am now committed to become a life long donor.
I have realized that what I have accomplished these past four years are only the “baby” steps to what I plan for the future. I
am hoping to one day have the capabilities to go back to Vietnam and donate my time as a doctor or to become a politician who will
give a voice for the Vietnamese community. I have passion for both debate and biology and aspire that one day my passion will help
others. I feel like I owe this to my family and to my fellow Vietnamese community. I would not be who I am today without my value
on education and community service. Through academic excellence, I am more aware politically and started to gain the knowledge
that I need to productive career. I learned that determination, perseverance, hard work, and discipline are key to success. Through
community service, I have learned to be humble, understanding, and appreciative. The revered Mahatma Ghandi stated, “You must
be the change you wish to see in the world.” That was my senior quote and that is a statement by which I live my life.

What does being Vietnamese-American mean to you and how does it affect your life?
Drops of blood were slowly caressing down my face. Sweat was clinging to the rhythmic motions of my body. I was gasp-
ing so hard that I could hardly breathe. Finally the towel was thrown in and the referee yelled "Time!" Exhausted, bruised and bleed-
ing, a smile crept across my face. I had just won my first match.
Growing up, my parents enrolled me in the activities typical for any young girl. Being immigrants from Vietnam, they felt
that their cultural differences were so conspicuous that I had to be redefined into the “All- American” girl. They made me believe
that being Vietnamese meant being socially disadvantaged.. Young and naive, I listened. However as I grew older, I began to ques-
tion my parents’ perspectives. If what my parents said was true then national harmony would be merely an unreachable ideal. This
philosophy depicts Man as an Oedipus-like creature, subservient to his fate. It cages and limits Man accordingly to his ethnicity and
culture. After a tumultuous experience in martial arts, I realized the beauty of America is that there is no rubric that defines an
American. What unites us is our strive towards a desired destination despite the obstacles that lay upon the journey.
On December 19, 1996, my mom was robbed at gunpoint. Amazingly, she fought back and survived the horrible ordeal.
After the incident, my mom immediately entered me in karate which was filled with men and boys. Needless to say I felt very un-
comfortable in that testosterone infused environment, but my mother's ability to fight back in the face of death inspired me to do the
same in a class of boys. As the only girl in the class, I was labeled and defined by my gender. I had no friends or respect. Determined
not to succumb to prejudice, I fought back. I showed up to class everyday and willed myself through it all. Soon I wasn’t looked
upon just as a girl anymore, but as a fighter
One afternoon, I entered a karate tournament where I was once again the only female participant. Although it was only my
first tournament, my will to fight burned so brightly that it illuminated my whole being. Suddenly, while waiting for my turn in the
ring, all the negativity I had faced through the years flowed back. Now I really wanted to fight, not so I could win, but so I could
break the barrier that said an Asian-American female is quiet, obedient and helpless. Looking around, I saw the same fierceness in
my opponents’ eyes. At that moment, gender, race and rank were stripped away. Naked without our societal categorizations, we were
equal. As I faced my opponent in the ring, my determination grew and a burst of adrenaline overtook my body. All the suppressed
frustration I had felt through my early years in martial arts had finally unleashed itself. For so long I was looked down upon because
I was an Asian-American female. I had been a caged bird for so long and now I was ready to sing. After three hours, six opponents
and six rounds, I won the title of Grand Champion and still have the six foot tall trophy to prove it.
Thomas Paine once said, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” Winning the title of Grand Champion
was exceptionally wonderful. However, what made the win so meaningful wasn’t the grand trophy, but the pain and passion that
went into winning it. Prejudice, categorizations and discrimination will always be present in our society because they are an innate
part of Man. However, it is our choice to let ourselves become subjective to these qualities. The hardships I faced and the discipline I
learned in martial arts taught me that I alone hold the key to my destiny. I can either triumph over the obstacles or lose myself in the
maze. In better words by the poet William Henley,“I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."
Today, I am proud to say that I am a Vietnamese-American. The hardships I faced in martial arts taught me that I am not
defined by my skin color. Martial arts changed my perspective on life. I do not believe that being Vietnamese means being at a so-
cial disadvantage. I embrace my culture and heritage. Vietnamese-Americans represent dedication and a desire for higher learning.
My parents have always taught me the importance of an education and also the significance of not having one. Both of my parents
fled Vietnam in the 1980s and were therefore unable to continue their education. They lacked a college degree and were forced to
take up minimally paying jobs. Thus they have always emphasized my need to continue my education after high school. A lot of
Vietnamese-Americans have similar stories. They left their home country so their children could reap the opportunities America
could offer. Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, many Vietnamese-Americans have been able to climb that social
ladder of success. It is because of them that this generation of American born Vietnamese-Americans are able to have more freedom
and opportunities for higher learning. Thus Vietnamese-Americans signify tenacity, courage and strength. My parents possess these
qualities and they have implemented these qualities in me. It is because of these qualities that I was able to overcome the prejudice I
faced in martial arts. Being Vietnamese have made such a lasting and significant impact in my life. Vietnamese-Americans strive for
education, but also have a great respect for family. In today’s society, many families are broken up. Children have no respect for
their elders. Family bonds are lost. However, due to the Vietnamese culture, I am able to hold on to that special bond with my fam-
ily. Being born Vietnamese at first made me feel inferior, but now I whole heartedly embrace my culture and ethnicity. I am proud
to call myself a Vietnamese-American.
